Define what social networking is (in your own words)

In my opinion Social Networking is people coming into groups to discuss online their shared interest.  I see it as the progression from discussions in person around the campfire, to people connecting with each other in different ways because of the distance between them. These included the invention of the postage stamp (to send letters), then the telephone (to speak to each other), two way radio, on to the teleprinter (the first on-line tool), then the fax machine (for documents and photos), email and eventually web sites that enable people to connect and share information though the World Wide Web.  As the Web is worldwide, it gives users the opportunity to get acquainted with people from many different countries and form friendships across diverse cultures.

Interests could be family, religion, school (primary, secondary, university or adult education), hobbies such as cooking or sewing, sports groups, politics.  Organisational social networks can support the teams or departments in the workplace.

Before the advent of personal computers and the internet, these groups would have only come together within the community they lived in.
